Karin Solomon – 26 January 2011
Our Russian friends left for Cape Town on Monday 17 January and were impressed that Durban had commissioned a cruise-liner to accompany them along the channel!
Captain Anatoly’s trimaran is causing considerable controversy in the Russian media, with loved ones and scientists – concerned about the stress load that can be born by sailors and boat respectively – urging them to run for shore while fellow adventurers and sponsor representatives give encouragement and support to fortify and test the fiber of the craft and crew.
After stopping in East London for repairs to a damaged pontoon and two of the steel pipes that had been replaced in Durban , the crew had a successful run to Port Elizabeth ; just off Mossel Bay the trimaran’s boom developed a second fracture. This was repaired under way and the Energy Diet trimaran is now approaching Agulhas and what may be the most perilous part of their expedition – apart perhaps from their encounter with a container ship on their approach to East London .

Media Technician crew member Evgeny Taskin recently uploaded to the Energy Diet website a video clip that gives impressions of conditions on board, the bond amongst the crew and repairs being undertaken under way, all to the strains of a song by Evgeny Kovalevski – a rendition to which he treated local sailors at a braai under the PYC thatch during their visit here.
The clip can be downloaded from the official Energy Diet website: http://www.energydiethd.com/
